Roles that technology can play in shaping the future of food in Hawaii. Kyle Datta is a general partner of Ulupono Initiative, a Hawaii-focused impact investing firm focusing on locally produced food, clean renewable energy and waste reduction. In his role at Ulupono, Kyle forges and manages partnerships and guides system transformation and investment strategy. Kyle has received master’s degrees in public and private management from the Yale School of Organization and Management and in environmental science in resource economics from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. He is co-author of the RMI books “Winning the Oil End Game” and “Small is Profitable.” Kyle lives on the Big Island and Oahu and likes to camp, kayak and play music with his wife and daughter. Today's agricultural research demands the use of innovative technology to tackle the challenges facing the industry. Dr. Billy Cook, Noble Foundation Agricultural Division Director, explains a number of advanced tools his organization is using to solve problems related to forage growth, cattle production, livestock feed efficiency and wildlife management. From GPS-enabled devices to measure forage growth to electronic ID tags to track the feed intake of individual animals, new technologies are enabling researchers to provide answers that will ultimately benefit land managers and agricultural producers. Cook's March 14, 2013 talk was given at the Texoma Cattlemen's Conference in Ardmore, Okla. The annual conference is presented by the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation for the benefit of cattle producers in the Southern Great Plains.

With 70 percent increase in global demand for healthy food, clean water and affordable energy in a healthy environment due to world population that is expected to reach over 9 billion by 2050, BATM graduates will be in high demand to develop, operate, support and spread technologies to support agricultural and biological systems that produce and provide these essentials of life. BATM graduates will also acquire skills that are transferable to other sectors that rely heavily on technology such as automotive and manufacturing industries.
